Couch Surfing Mavericks

They canceled the Mavericks big surf contest here for the last several years because the waves just weren't big enough. The North Shore equivalent is the Eddie Aikau big wave challenge in Waimea Bay. Mavericks began this morning at 8AM Pacific with a live webcast, with some of the biggest surf they've seen and a high tide. It's about 25 minutes from our house. The surf breaks so far offshore that you need to use big binoculars to see it from the bluffs. There really isn't a beach there, and the guys doing the commentary on the live feed were on scaffolding erected on the beach (what were they thinking!?), and as I type this, they're still managing to stay put as the tide creeps up.

The action this morning.

Not exactly Waimea Bay, is it? We picknicked near this beach years ago with the kids and found some great abalone shells.

I guess the couch was the safest place to watch from. I see in the post this morning several spectators were injured seriously and the scaffold was destroyed. That scaffold had the PA system on it and comprimised their ability to warn spectators to move back. The surfing was the best evr seen there but the spectating could not be described without using the word cluster.
