Smell the roses

U-Va.'s One-Year Wonder - washingtonpost.com I thought this guy was blogworthy. Interesting as a student and even more interesting as a parent. Something tells me he missed alot regardless of his super intelect. Whats next for him, maybe a career in mathematics and retirement by 22

I just can't fathom wanting to do that to myself. Makes me wonder if he really had time to enjoy college and learn what there is to be learned outside of a classroom... oh well, at least he got the most bang for his buck.

I think law is a noble profession, but when someone who is as smart as this kid feels like patent law is his path to "a career that ensures he doesn't have to think about money anymore" it is just, er, unsettling. There is a very distrubing trend in patents - patent trolls - where a small company which is basically made up of lawyers buys patents (perhaps via a company going bannkrupt) and then makes money by suing others. Nathan Myhrvold, one the minds behind Microsoft Windows, founded a company whose business model is based on this approach. Of course, there is the money to be made being a lawyer working to fight such stuff, too. In my biased view, none of this contributes to the overall good of the world and competitiveness, which patents were designed to do.
