I will probably have energy to say something more about the Yale vs. Cornell women's polo game, but for now I think I'll relay the entire contents of the live text messaging between Dara and me that went on during the game as transcribed here directly from my phone:
- Steve: 5-4 yale after 1 chukker
- Dara: Thanks.
- Steve: 11-7 yale at half
- Dara: This is so hard. How is she playing?
- Steve: She was playing well until she fell off and was walked on in the 2nd chukker but nobody was doing well in the 3rd as they are now behind 15-11. Ugh!
- Dara: Yikes!!!
- Steve: To let you in on the excitement they are now down 1
- Steve: 3 min left
- Dara: Argh
- Steve: Down 2 with 1 min
- Dara: Damn
- Steve: 18 15 loss
- Dara: Shit
- Steve: Kyla's tearful summary is that they were robbed by the referees and she hates these people
- Dara: Hard way to lose

Must have been a nail biter. To bad the score didn't work in their favor. Sounds like a case of the agony of defeat ripped from the jaws of victory.
It was probably more difficult to watch than to get the text messaging updates, but Dara may disagree. Kyla claims the horse carefully walked over her, by the way (one of her Yale "babies" being ridden by a Cornell player at the time). Um, it didn't look like that from where I was sitting, but she got back up and continued playing. To add insult to near injury, the refs decided there was a foul against Yale right before the fall, so Cornell got to take a shot on goal as their reward.
Anyway, as their coach said, this is the best women's polo team Yale has ever had, so there was no shame, and it was a great season for all of them.
The pony who walked over me honestly didn't touch me. She got all 4 feet over me without leaving a mark. I've got plenty of bruises from the game, but none from that particular incident. And for those of you who care, the women are thoroughly enjoying themselves here despite our loss.
