New Sport?

After watching the first ever Olympic snowboard-cross race tonight, I've decided that this is the next step in snowboarding for Dad and I. We might have to take a few terrain park lessons first though in order to prepare for the gigantic bumps on the courses. If you missed out on the men's races tonight you should definitely check out the women tomorrow night, it's really exciting to watch - speed, jumps, and the inevitable crashing!

I love that event its very exciting. On the edge speed and the probability of contact always seems like the ultimate in individual sports. I thought it was interesting that every contestant I saw interviewed mentioned they were frustrated moto-crossers making the next logical progression in sports for them.

You read your Dad's mind Kyla. He said that to me as we were watching. Of course I think you two snowboard that way already. Whatever happened to the rule 'If my board comes off the ground I'm doing something wrong'? Crashing horses, I mean polo, is not dangerous enough for you?

For the record, I have two rules for snowboarding. Rule 1: If your board leaves the snow, you made a mistake. Rule 2: If you feel the urge for your board to leave the snow, go immediately to the lodge and have a drink. If you follow both of these rules, it's really quite safe. I have not quite figured out how to craft a rule around throwing yourself off of a glacier at 12,500 feet, but I'm sure there is one in there somewhere.

As for snowcross, it is definitely cool. When I was watching it and felt the urge to try it out, I walked over to the refrigerator for some ice cream (a variation on Rule 2, you will note). A serious crash or two during the competition might help me keep the urge under control.

After reading this post from Kyla, I wandered over to my favorite lefty blog only to find him dissing snowboarders and snowcross. Hmm, I may have to rethink my opinion of the guy. The comments are pretty funny, because they show you the fight between snowboarders and skiers, with a dash of people saying any judged sport should not be in the Olympics.
