Ankle Biters

Making the rounds of the local news shows tonight was a story of an east bay cop who was attacked by a pack of angry Chihuahuas when he returned a kid home after a traffic incident. I see the AP got right on it. The cop seemed a bit embarrassed. I wonder why.

As I read the first sentence, I thought this was shorthand for "Hispanic Gang."

However, I'm most intrigued by the notion of: " ... escorting a teenager home after a traffic stop ... "

What sort of a traffic stop ends with the police oficer escorting the teenager home? I mean, either a ticket is issued, or an arrest is made, right?

The thought of some third, more benign, outcome to a traffic stop is also belied by the very attack that's being reported. After all, it's well known that the best way to incur an attack by a dog is to show hostile intentions towards the dog's master!

Also, this: " ... minor injuries, including bites to his ankle ... "; what other injuries could a pack of chihuahua's impart, besides bites to the ankle?

... and yea, right: "Detective Bill Veteran"? ... and my name is John Q. Public! Responsible reporting would at least insert the notation [sic] after the name Bill Veteran!

I think AP has really fallen down on the job, here, as we really need a lot more details. They give us just enough for us to realize we don't really have a clue what's actually going on here!

Here's the more elaborate SJ Mercury article that came out this morning. I'm sure we'll be seeing it in News of the Weird before long.
