Forthrightness

Via one of those lefty blogs I like to read, I saw this article about Tony Blair's new head of his Joint Intelligence Committee. This is the kind of tell-it-like-it-is civil servant we should be looking for. Read down through the paragraph starting with "It was subsequently announced that both Ms Moore and Mr Sixsmith had resigned" to see what I mean.

I think the key here is in this paragraph:

"Sir Richard is known for his confidence in presenting policy options to ministers, however unpalatable. This may have prompted the general surprise at his appointment. The insiders' favourite to take up the post was Sir Francis Richards, a former diplomat, director of GCHQ, and governor of Gibraltar."

Obviously, what we've got here is an administrative error, in which Sir Richard is appointed, when Sir [Francis] Richards was actually the intended appointee! Just another cock-up.
