So I was trying out the new software Steven recommended for sending pictures to the blog. I'm amazed to see the photo actually made it, which I didn't take, btw. I can't remember how I happened to have the picture of the black skimmer, but there's a story anyway.
I walk the beach every day and not much happens there that I haven't seen before. But on Christmas morning about 8 o'clock a flock of at least 100 skimmers flew in and landed right in front of me on the beach. I've never seen more than two or three at a time and then only on rare occasions. But this flock just took my breath away, a wonderful and unexpected Christmas present, and I've been wanting to tell everyone about it. This kind of thing ranks as real excitement for the old folks.

I think everyone inherited the bird watching genes. I still remember that time when Keith and I sailed ever so slowly through a sea of ducks on a little creek going into the Wicomico. They mostly just swam out of the way. Out here we have pelicans migrate through. They fly one after the other in a long line, very close to the surface of the ocean, going up and down over the swells. I remember sitting on the beach and counting over a hundred in a single line once. We also have lots of hawks and falcons. Oracle has a family of falcons that nest on the building I'm in. You have to watch where you stand outside. Once when a film crew was covering that story, I commented to my friend Hal that it seemed so un-Oracle-like that we would be presented as falcon huggers. He said he didn't see why, because after all, it is a bird of prey.
I love birdwatching also we have a lot of different types to look at. Ive even gone as far as keeping a list of the different ones I've seen, my list gets a little longer every year,Proving you don't need a computer to register on the geekometer. Speaking of unusal species Missy has some pics of wierd sea life found after the sunami in Indonesia. I hope to convince her to Blog them so everyone can be as shocked as Dan and I.
